The funny thing is that at exactly the same time Brent is arguing that Fascism is Socialism, Winsor is arguing you should vote Fascist to prevent Socialism, and they will both back each other up without a hint of irony.

Yep. I saw that this morning. It was fun while it lasted, and I really wish it were as vibrant as it once was. To me it was a much more democratic (in the sense of participation) format than FB, Reddit, or whatever else is out there. There’s an awful lot of good information here Wendy P.

People who state Harris can’t articulate anything seem to have prejudice/misogyny, comprehension problems or the inability to speak English. As for Joe 2.0, he’s done a pretty good job, peacefully handed over the reigns to a younger candidate. I’d say he’s a pretty good act to follow.

Really? Biden created more jobs than Trump Biden created more manufacturing jobs than Trump Biden drilled more oil than Trump Biden had better stock market performance than Trump Biden added less debt than Trump The economy does better under Democrats and Democrats generally add less to the debt than Republicans. But sure, you don't go by feels, you go by facts.

This coming from the people who think vaccines don't work, that climate change is a Chinese hoax, that windmill cancer is a thing, that women can "shut down" a pregnancy if they are raped, and that Haitian immigrants are eating people's pets in Springfield. I prefer actual reality, even if alternative facts conform more closely to conservative agendas.

In 1939 it was illegal for black men to serve as pilots in the US military. Due to a DEI offensive from the NAACP, labor union leader A. Philip Randolph and Judge William H. Hastie, a war appropriations bill was passed containing funding to train black pilots. This effectively legitimized the use of black pilots by the US military. It was not without friction; a great many opposed it. Major General Frank O'Driscoll Hunter, for example, insisted that "racial friction will occur if colored and white pilots are trained together." But they persevered, and by the end of the war, this DEI squadron (also known as the Tuskeegee Airmen) flew almost 200 bomber protection missions, with a record of protecting bombers almost twice as well as the all-white squadrons flying at that time. Overall the squadron received one silver star, 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses,14 Bronze Stars, 744 Air Medals and at least 60 Purple Hearts. Proof of their unity, excellence and honor by any measure. Martha McSally was one of the first women to fly for the USAF in combat. She was able to do that as the result of a DEI effort to lift the prohibition against women in combat in 1991. She ended up as a decorated squadron leader before retiring and becoming a US representative, where she served for two years in Congress. She was part of several DEI lawsuits, including one against the DoD to end the requirement that women in the US military wear burqas when in public in Arab countries. She was also raped by a superior officer, but managed to overcome that and still become squadron leader during her time in the service. Leigh Ann Hester was a seargeant in the 617th Military Police Company. In 2005 the supply convoy she was guarding came under attack by at least 50 insurgents. She led her team to flank the attackers, and used grenades to end the threat. At the end, there were 27 dead and 6 insurgents, with no losses of the US supply team. She ended up with the Distinguished Service Cross. Again an indication of unity, excellence and honor. So I'd say that DEI has in fact done a lot for combat. It is why black people and women can now serve in the military. It has taken hard work, and overcoming the objections of people like General Hunter above, but we are all better off because of it.

It’s really quite simple: you start with the conclusion, for example “Trump good, Libs bad”, and you just work backwards from there to try and twist the facts into that form…Pro Tip: this is easier if you do it with a complete disregard for facts and/or previous statements that you yourself have asserted as facts. It truly is a flawless strategy.

A Rabbi is teaching his student the Talmud and explains god created everything in this world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson. The clever student asks “What lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did god create them?” The Rabbi responds “God created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all – the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone who is in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that god commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.” “This means” the Rabbi continued “that when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say ‘I pray that god will help you.’ instead for the moment, you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no god who can help, and say ‘I will help you.'”

I've said it repeatedly: it's not the issues so much as it's that Trump is an odious scumbag willing to harm anyone for an iota of personal gain. I will make money from his policies but I was happy to leave it on the table in exchange for being represented by an adult not a name calling bully who is both stupid and wide open to manipulation. Bill, thanks as always for your efforts. But the sad truth is that those of us here who are vehement anti Trumpers have long been too aware of how autocrats are made and wouldn’t trade our freedom or anyone else’s for a few more coins in the purse. The rest of us here either don’t care or don’t have the capacity to understand what the new reality would be living under Trump ver.2. Sadder is that all we can do now is hope.

Over 31,000 well documented LIES from Trump during his presidency. Tell us how Trump kept his word about having a plan to replace Obamacare. Tell us how Trump kept his word about releasing his tax returns. Tell us how Trump kept his word about Mexico paying for his wall. He said he wouldn’t have time to play golf if elected president. But he made more than 250 visits to his golf clubs — a record for any president. He promised to be “the voice” of American workers. He wasn’t. His administration stripped workers of their rights, repealed overtime protections, rolled back workplace safety rules, and turned a blind eye to employers who steal their workers’ wages. He promised that the average American family would see a $4,000 pay raise because of his tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations. Trickle down didn't happen. He promised to bring down the price of prescription drugs and said drug companies are “getting away with murder.” He didn't do it. He promised to revive the coal industry and bring back lost coal mining jobs. The coal industry lost jobs. He promised to lock up Hillary Clinton for using a private email server. He didn’t. Instead, Trump used his personal cellphone for official business, and several members of his own administration, including Jared Kushner and Ivanka, used private email in the White House. He promised “six weeks of paid maternity leave to any mother with a newborn child whose employer does not provide the benefit.” He didn’t. He promised to bring an end to Kim Jong Un’s nuclear program. Kim expanded North Korea’s nuclear program. He said he would distance himself from his businesses while in office. He didn't. He promised that tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations would spur economic growth and pay for themselves. His tax cuts added $2 trillion to the federal deficit. The list of broken Trump promises goes on and on. And fools continue to believe him

You ever been in an environment where you know violence could be imminent at any point and that said violence will 99% work out badly for you? Maybe walked into a Vagos bar wearing red? something along those lines? Cause, I would prefer that the women in my life, and really all women, don't have to feel that way. Many do, and these antics make it significantly worse.

I'm not sure why you think an mRNA vaccine is not a vaccine but there is a lot of evidence that it functions as one. I know you will carry your personal anger and resentment over the extreme pressure put on you and others to make the sacrifice of taking it for the common good despite your beliefs to the grave with you. I'm not even going to try to have that argument again. But the fact is that it is an effective measure that attenuated the epidemic and allowed society to get close to normalcy far faster and with far less death than otherwise. Without it we would be in a far worse place right now.
  30. 3 points
Maybe that's also because the standard of evidence required for a rape appears to be higher; you made it clear that basically nothing that Carroll said would convince you that she was telling the truth, and that you don't even believe her win; you're probably not alone. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It just means the bullies get to "win." Wendy P.

I'll concede, and have done so here repeatedly, that we missed a lot and Harris was far from the best candidate possible. But what is nonsensical to me is that the right seems unable to address Trumps criminality and unfitness in any serious way. For example, do you believe January 6 was a "love fest" as Trump has stated and will you be proud to be an American when he fulfills his promise to pardon the lot of those convicted of actions that resulted in 140 police officers being injured or worse?

There’s a lot to process. Over the past 25 years we’ve seen so many major events and changes. From 9/11 through the GFC and Covid. The election of Trump is/was quite likely fuelled by fear and uncertainty, for many of those who voted for him. At the same time, I think for the vast majority of the world his election brings on fear, anxiety and uncertainty of what is to come. It’s so easy to give into fear and obsess over what if’s. I’ve got a child in the military, and honestly I was already not very happy that he is going to see active conflict. Now I fear that it could be so much worse, because I don’t see Trump as a peace maker. There are posters here that are knowledgeable about history (Jakee, Billvon, Kallend to name a few) and the parallels with the history of facism and the rise of the nazies is scary. A large part of me wants to just switch off to it all and get on with life in blissful ignorance. I’m very lucky, I live in a place with no geopolitical significance and financially I have nothing to worry about. Ultimately I believe the right thing to do is to connect with those around us and do our best to rebuild a sense of community and support in challenging times.

With all due respect to the very sincere and well intentioned people, I really think America needs to stop saying that they set the global standard for decorum, rule of law and democracy in the world. Yes once upon a time that was true, but American politics is now a clown show. Trump is the ring master, but the list is endless JD Vance, Mike Johnson, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell… The Supreme Court, Elon Musk, The so called rule of law has been shown to be an illusion- if it wasn’t Trump would be in jail many years ago. Empires rise and fall, the American public are the biggest victims, it will hurt the rest of the world as well. Sorry Kamala but I disagree with your view that America still sets the standard. It’s incredible that in the past 25 years we have had 9/11, Global Financial Crisis, Brexit, and Covid. Yet the current American crisis feels like all of those pale in comparison.

If you like, but that ostensible truth doesn't void the fact that whatever was the brain chemistry rebalance, or sudden electrical storm, that caused the subject to grab a gun and murder his family is still a mystery. Nor does it void the fact that a butcher knife has the same utility. Of course the proliferation of guns in America is a huge contributor to these events, you won't get an argument from me, but clearly there is a lot more involved that can't be known from making a few jumps together or giving them a good look over. As I recall, Ted Bundy was a rather benign and pleasant looking fellow who preferred bludgeoning over shooting.

A 15-year-old boy accused of killing his parents and three siblings at their home in Washington state shot them and then called police to claim that one of the victims killed his family and then himself, according to court documents. The boy was charged Thursday with five counts of murder and one count of attempted murder in the slayings Monday morning in Fall City. Two adults and three children — 7, 9 and 13 years old — were found dead shortly before 5 a.m. Monday after a shooting was reported at a home in the Lake Alice Road neighborhood in Fall City, about 25 miles east of Seattle. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/15-year-old-charged-killing-parents-3-siblings-washington-rcna176893 "The surviving 11-year-old sibling told police that her 15-year-old brother shot her and her family with a Glock handgun that belonged to their father, the probable cause statement says." Yes, clearly there are many Americans who would prefer a right wing dictator over social change that involves treating people of all kinds with respect and dignity. Hitler also was able to tap into people's innate tribalism and distrust of others. You have shown that you understand Trump's appeal and that of the MAGA fear mongers. What side are you going to choose? And please stop with the communist/socialist boogeyman drivel. In the current two party system in the US there is no socialist option. Just two different choices each dominated by capitalist ideology and each supported by various billionaires trying to become trillionaires.

You said that you think Trump can bring you a conservative view of America. I have a couple of questions -- one, why didn't he last time, particularly when he had the House and Senate too? Why wasn't he willing to deal with the Democrats who were willing to deal with him, and giving him a part-of-the-cake bill for border control? And why was he unwilling to have the bipartisan border deal go through this year? He plays hardball politics, at the expense of the American people, and I see that as a problem. The second on is what do you see as a conservative-led America? Do I have the same rights I did before? Do I have the same respect as a human being as I had before, or am I more subject to someone else's norms? I see a country where people can, in fact, be gay and happy about it; a country where access and opportunity are there, rather than controlled so that only the 'right' decisions can be made (even when those decisions don't take modern situations or technology, or even human nature, into account). I see a country where fear isn't a driving force. I see a country where the transition of power for each and every publicly elected job is peaceful, rather than dependent on who has the deepest pockets to sue for victory. To me, that last is one of the single most important things that makes America great; I've lived where that wasn't true, and there was a lot more fear. Fear weakens and destroys people; it's a blunt tool of limited power. Wendy P.
